Hitting the Books
Literacy should be an important part of everyone’s daily life, from preschool children to full grown adults. In hopes of promoting the importance of reading, Henderson Libraries is offering both children and adults the chance to discover (or rediscover) a love for the written word with their Summer Reading Challenge, which will take place from June 8th – August 24th this year.
The challenge is simple: keep track of what you read and earn prizes for the more time you spend with your books. Children can earn rewards that include selections from a “treasure box” or tickets to the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, while teens can earn coupons to Jamba Juice and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. Adults can participate as well, with each hour they read counting as an entry toward an end-of-summer prize drawing that includes tickets to The Mob Museum, a golf package at Legacy Golf Club and more. Of course, the greatest prize of all is the chance to open up your imagination and sharpen your mind by discovering the wonders that reading has to offer. For full details, stop by any Henderson Libraries location or visit www.mypubliclibrary.com.

Sending a Strong Message
The epidemic of bullying is one of the uglier aspects of growing up and something that students across the valley face on a daily basis. The Richard Harris Law Firm is making an effort to help teens fight back by once again sponsoring a video public service announcement (PSA) contest. Now in its fourth year, the contest encourages Clark County high school students to submit their own self-made video PSA on the topic of bullying, drawing from their own real life experiences.
“It has become a disturbing trend over the past few years to hear about more children and teenagers bullied at school and online,” says Richard Harris, founder of the Richard Harris Law Firm. “If we can draw enough attention to the issue and impact even one child, we’ve done our job.” Now it’s up to students in the community to do theirs. To enter the contest, students must upload their video to YouTube and email a link to psa2013@richardharrislaw.com. Entries must be received by May 24th and will be judged by a panel of media and broadcast professionals with prizes awarded to the winners. Visit www.studentswithacause.com for more information.

Thinking Outside the Box
The epidemic of homelessness is one of the most tragic realities of life in our city, or any city for that matter. If there’s not much we can do for those who are less fortunate, we can at least show them that somebody out there cares about what they’re going through. That’s the purpose behind Cardboard City, an event sponsored by Family Promise of Las Vegas, a nonprofit organization committed to helping low income families achieve lasting independence in the face of adversity.
Held at St. Thomas More Catholic Community on April 20th, the event is designed to boost public awareness of homelessness by having participants sleep overnight in a cardboard box to help them better connect with the struggles faced by the homeless population every day. Those who don’t wish to participate directly can still sponsor a participant or become an event sponsor, so there’s a way for everyone to give something back. By learning to sympathize with the plight of our destitute neighbors, we gain a better perspective on how to affect change that can bring hope to the hopeless. While many people take up bicycle riding for exercise or health reasons, others ride for hope. On January 26th, the Riders for Candlelighters Team began their progressive training program in preparation for competing in the 80-mile Tour de Summerlin on April 20th to help benefit the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada (CCCFN). The training regimen is designed to fit individual cycling levels and get people off the couch and ready to compete in an endurance event in four months time. Coaches and mentors keep the team engaged by cycling on different routes while giving words of encouragement and singing goofy songs to boost morale.
The motivation behind this journey goes beyond fundraising and symbolizes the hope that anyone can overcome the impossible. If a three year old can undergo chemotherapy and forfeit their childhood, then these riders can train under any circumstance. CCCFN shares this spirit with the children and families who deal with the realities of childhood cancer every day. Riders for Candlelighters are doing their part to give them hope and prove that anything is possible if you believe. Visit www.candlelightersnv.org for more information.

Literary Locals
Former New York police officer and local resident Daniel O’Connor had an upbringing filled with challenges. When he was four years old, he lost his mother to cancer. His father succumbed to the disease two years later. O’Connor then went to live with his grandmother, who passed away when he was ten. Despite the tragedy in his life, he persevered and went on to become a highly decorated officer with the Suffolk County Police. He attributes a lot of his success to his love of reading, a passion which led him to another milestone: becoming a published author.
Hoping to inspire younger generations to rise above their difficulties in life, O’Connor has recently published a novel titled Sons of the Pope, co-written with Peter Randazzo. Set in Brooklyn and spanning several generations, the novel weaves a tale of love and hatred, devotion and betrayal, murder and miracles. It’s the kind of epic storytelling on a broad canvas that he’s always loved. With a lot of life experience to draw from, O’Connor’s writing is sure to capture imaginations across the globe. Fox, who has been tireless in his commitment to raise funds and awareness for the disease. Hope is an important thing for anyone suffering a debilitating disease, and thanks to Joseph and Ryan, that hope remains alive. “Even though neither me or my friend know anyone with Parkinson’s,” said Joseph, “we want to help better our community and the lessons and stories we’ve heard along the way are inspiration to our lives.”

Macy’s Make-A-Wish “Believe”

Perfect Score
Anyone who’s ever taken a trip to the bowling alley with friends knows that rolling a perfect game is next to impossible. Twelve strikes in a row seems like such an incredible feat that most of us never even think about achieving it. Irma Wenzel, 79, did more than just think about it – she did it! A member of the senior league at Red Rock Lanes at Red Rock Resort, Irma hit the perfect score of 300 during league play on September 26th and was presented with a commemorative trophy.
Irma has played at Red Rock Lanes since the center opened along with the property in 2006, and league play brings her to the bowling alley at least twice a week. While her feat was undeniably impressive, Irma’s no stranger to big accomplishments. This lifetime athlete has also hiked the Alps and once won the national pistol championships more than a half century ago. With a perfect bowling game now under her belt, Irma has one more incredible exploit to add to her list.

Stroke of Luck
Ask any avid golfer about the chances of sinking a hole in one and you’re sure to be told it’s a near impossible feat. For two golfers to land holes in one on the same course on the same day, that’s an even more remarkable feat. And when those two golfers are husband and wife, well, it’s hard to count odds that go that high. But that’s exactly what happened at Anthem Country Club on August 25th when husband and wife Jim and Fay Geddes each sank their own hole in one.
Jim’s hole in one happened on hole number four, with a four hybrid shot from an impressive 148 yards. He’s no stranger to holes in one as this was the fifth of his career. Fay, however, landed her first one ever on the fourteenth hole with an eight iron shot from 91 yards. It was truly an exciting day for the couple, a feat that will probably never be duplicated in their lifetimes but one they had the good fortune to share together. Maybe there are a few open spots on the PGA Tour!

CHARITY
On the Right Foot
A large portion of destitute people across the valley aren’t able to get proper foot care or even a decent pair of shoes. That’s where Hearts to Soles is trying to help. Since 2004, the outreach program has provided free foot examinations and shoes to the needy across the United States. Local orthopedic foot surgeon Dr. Troy Watson has been getting into the act as well. Dr. Watson and his staff will offer free foot screenings to the less fortunate on November 16th while also supplying them with free footwear at the Salvation Army.
Dr. Watson spends time every year fitting the homeless with proper shoes through the Hearts to Soles program. However, tough economic times have led to a decrease in the number of shoes available, so Dr. Watson is seeking donations of new and lightly used men’s shoes in sizes eight through thirteen. Donations can be dropped off at any of his three office locations: 2800 E. Desert Inn Road, 8402 W. Centennial Parkway, and 2930 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway. Give the gift of shoes this season and help the less privileged among us stand tall. Visit www.feetmd.com for more information.

Walk for a Cause
Now that the weather has cooled off a bit, it’s a perfect time to catch up on your outdoor exercise while helping out a noble charity at the same time. On September 8th, Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada will be holding their 22nd annual 5K and one mile race at Mountain’s Edge Exploration Park. The event will feature a children’s play area, snacks, raffles and awards for winners. Visit www.candlelightersnv.org for registration and more information.
You can also lace up your sneakers and join the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation’s Rockin’ Walk on September 30th at TPC Summerlin. Walk as much or as little as you like with three courses to choose from: a one mile mixed hole, 2.5 mile back nine or five mile 18-hole walk. Stick around for some great live entertainment, fun prizes and giveaways and goodie bags for all walkers. Proceeds will help Goodie Two Shoes provide local disadvantaged children with new shoes, socks and more. Visit www.goodietwoshoes.org for registration and more information.
