The Bitcoin Bodega highlights a recent trend in bitcoin tourism, providing digital currency enthusiasts with a quick, easy and safe means to buy or sell bitcoin. No more carrying cash on planes or dealing with strict bank limitations and holidays. Tourists can now store money digitally and withdraw cash from the Bitcoin Bodega as soon as they arrive on the Las Vegas Strip.

The kiosk is centrally located within walking distance of most Las Vegas casinos. The location provides convenient drive-up parking and a security guard on site at all times.  A partnership led by Chris McAlary, a bitcoin trader and former bitcoin miner, and his Pomona College roommate and Las Vegas native, Joshua Schlachter Esq., will operate the Robocoin Kiosk.

“In partnering with Robocoin, Coin Cloud has been able to deploy the first bitcoin ATM on the Las Vegas Strip,” said Chris McAlary, owner of Coin Cloud. “I’m pleased to provide the vast Las Vegas marketplace with the highest quality of product and access to the joy of bitcoin.”

Bitcoin Bodega is open 7 days a week; 8am to 12pm at the Viva Vegas souvenir shop located at 3735 Las Vegas Blvd S. Las Vegas, NV 89109-4308.

CASA FOUNDATION SENDS FOSTER KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL ON A POSITIVE NOTE

Jul 29, 2014   //   by Meghan Pescio   //   Community News  //  No Comments

The CASA Foundation, a local non-profit organization, is partnering with Square Salon to sponsor a special back-to-school event for foster children. The event will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. PDT, Sunday, August 10 at Square Salon, located at 1225 South Fort Apache Blvd. (at the intersection of Charleston and Fort Apache across from Mimi’s Restaurant).

The CASA Foundation is calling on Las Vegas locals to help make a difference for children in foster care by donating backpacks and school supplies for the event.

“The beginning of the school year can be a scary and stressful time for these children” said Mary Giuliano, who serves as the CASA Board of Directors. “Children in foster care typically do not experience the stability and security of a traditional family home, a basic emotional need that most of us take for granted every day. This unique event is designed to get these kids excited, cleaned up and ready to go back to school.”

For the third year in a row, Square Salon is hosting a day of pampering for these special children, with plans to help approximately 300 kids this year. All children in attendance will receive a shampoo, haircut and blow dry along with a manicure and take home a backpack filled with school supplies. There will also be food, music, balloons and a photo booth.

The CASA foundation raises money to support Clark County children in foster care that are faced with a myriad of unmet financial needs that exceed governmental funding. Currently there are more than 3,500 children in foster care in Clark County alone. For more information on becoming a donor or the event itself, please contact Nancy Myster at (702) 497-2002 or Madison at (702) 588-2722. To donate a backpack or school supplies please bring to Square Salon on or before August 3, 2014.

OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE CELEBRATES 10th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ‘LAS VEGAS GREAT SANTA RUN’

Jul 28, 2014   //   by Meghan Pescio   //   Community News  //  No Comments

Santa Clauses are coming to town to participate in the 10th anniversary of the Las Vegas Great Santa Run benefitting Opportunity Village on Saturday, December 6. One of the largest gatherings of Santa-clad runners will take place in Downtown Las Vegas, beginning at Fremont Street Experience and spanning across popular downtown venues.

Opportunity Village has opened an early bird discount for any Saint Nicks who register for the 5K run or one-mile Kris Kringle Jingle walk. The early bird discount is available now through August 31 and is priced at $40 for individuals; $35 per person on a team of five or more; and $25 for children under 17-years-old. Registration includes a five piece Santa suit and a runner goody bag from event sponsors. Participants are also encouraged to bring their canine companions, who can join in on the fun for $10 and receive a doggie bag full of treats and toys. Registration is available on the Great Santa Run website.

The Great Santa Run raises funds and awareness for Opportunity Village’s programs, which provide unparalleled opportunities, enrichment and support to nearly 3,000 citizens with disabilities and their families throughout the Las Vegas Valley. It has been the reigning champion of the “World Santa Challenge” for three consecutive years and hopes to uphold that tradition in 2014.

This year not only marks the notable anniversary of this iconic event, but also the 60th anniversary of Opportunity Village, the beloved Las Vegas non-profit. To celebrate, Opportunity Village will raise $136 million, which was kicked off with a $10 million donation in May by Dorothy and Lacy Harber in addition to a $35 million challenge gift from the Engelstad Family Foundation, which will be donated as a match gift once Opportunity Village reaches its fundraising goal. These donations will be used to expand Opportunity Village and fulfill three initiatives, including the development of its first residential village at the Engelstad campus, followed by a new campus and residential village in the northwest valley.

“We have built a family and a home for our clients and we are blessed to have the great support of our Las Vegas community and beyond,” said Linda Smith, Associate Executive Director of Opportunity Village. “Celebrating 10 years of the Great Santa Run and 60 years of Opportunity Village is humbling. There is no better way to celebrate the most wonderful time of year than by giving back.”

Last year, more than 11,000 Santas were joined by international superstar Grand Marshal Shania Twain. After a morning of festivities including live entertainment and a costume contest, Mayor Carolyn Goodman declared the day the official “Las Vegas Great Santa Run Day.”

Henderson Libraries adjusts hours to stretch library access

Jul 24, 2014   //   by Meghan Pescio   //   Community News  //  No Comments

On July 17, the Henderson Libraries Board approved changes to library branch hours beginning on Monday, Sept. 8. Changes include the return of Monday hours to the Paseo Verde Library and slight adjustments to the Green Valley and James I. Gibson library branches. All changes were based on patron demand and neighborhood use of the libraries.

paseo library

All the Henderson Libraries have been closed on Mondays for nearly two years due to lack of funding.  While the library district still does not have sufficient funding to truly expand hours of service, some adjustments to the schedule help provide access to library service for as many patrons as possible.

The Paseo Verde Library, located at 280 S. Green Valley Parkway at the 215 Beltway, will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday throughSaturday.

The Green Valley Library, located 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway at Sunset Road, will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

James I. Gibson Library, located at 100 W. Lake Mead Parkway near Boulder Highway, will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Heritage Park Senior Facility Library, at 300 S. Racetrack Road, hours will remain with self-service hours for seniors ages 50 and older from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Library staff will still be available at this location from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursdays.

The Green Valley and Gibson branches will remain closed on Mondays, and all branches are closed on Sundays.

Established in 1943 as a single library in Downtown Henderson, Henderson Libraries operates four locations throughout Henderson. Henderson Libraries cooperates with other public libraries in Southern Nevada, the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Clark County School District and all other libraries around the state to provide quality service for Nevada’s residents.
