A Little to the Left, Please…The Healing World of Pet Massage

Jul 3, 2012   //   by wagona   //   PetPourri  //  No Comments

By  Hana Haatainen Caye

Eyes closed. Body limp. If you listen hard enough, you can barely make out an “oh yeah” coming from your furry friend. And in the midst of the glorious indulgence known as pet massage, the “friend” feeling is oh so mutual. When done correctly, it’s hard to tell who benefits more… you or your pet!

The concept of therapeutic pet massage dates back to the 1970s, when Jack Meagher helped introduce equine massage to the U.S. Equestrian Team. By the 1990s, Meagher’s methods had been adapted for use with cats and dogs, and the notion of pet massage expanded even further. Research over the past couple of decades shows solid evidence of massage’s true benefits in the form of healthier and happier dogs and cats. And the positive results don’t stop there. Humans can reap the rewards as well, giving both animal lovers and their furry friends something to feel good about.

Animal Advantages

When it comes to keeping your pet healthy and helping them through various medical issues, massage can become a key component in animal wellness. Whether you take your dog or cat to a certified professional or engage in the practice yourself, pet massage provides myriad benefits.

Physical Benefits

While nothing takes the place of a visit to the vet, massage can still help alleviate numerous ailments for your beloved pet. Massage has been shown to boost immune systems, decrease blood pressure, stimulate circulation, increase bone density and release endorphins, which act as natural painkillers. Pets suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia and other joint or muscle related disorders can also benefit from massage as it helps to improve joint health and function and provides a wider range of flexibility and movement for your furry friend. It’s even been shown to aid digestion and reduce swelling. But more than anything, it will help your animal relax.

Psychological Benefits

If a pet suffers from separation anxiety or stress related to prior abuse, groomer or vet appointments, or even the loss of a family member or other pet, massage can ease many of the stress factors and help create a peaceful environment. Massage also serves to bond the pet to its owner, which is particularly beneficial in the case of shelter dogs or cats that experienced traumatic incidents or simply lacked a close relationship with people in the past. Young dogs in particular will quickly develop trust and lose the fear of being touched by strangers such as a vet or groomer. This is helpful when it comes to nail clipping or other paw touching activities.

Michael Fox, D.V.M., believes massage is essential for pet welfare. In his book, The Healing Touch, he emphasizes the importance of physical contact: “The tender loving touch is essential for well being and for the normal growth and development of all socially dependent animals. As a seedling cannot thrive without the light of the sun, so, too, do our animal kin suffer without the energy of love. And it is through touch especially, that this energy can be given and reciprocated.”

People Perks

Massage also gives people an opportunity to connect with their pets in a deeper way. Dogs have long been used in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and other places to provide patients with a special kind of therapy. The simple act of petting a dog brings humans many of the same health benefits experienced by animals, including lowered blood pressure and a boosted immune system, along with increased self esteem and a general feeling of overall comfort. By giving your pet a massage, you can help yourself feel better and create an increased sense of well being.

The time spent massaging a cat or dog can also help fight depression as focus moves away from self and toward pet wellness. Research professor Dr. Johannes Odendaal of Life Sciences Research Institute tested the effect of petting a dog on the human brain. The before and after results revealed that cortisol, a stress related neurochemical, decreased following a dog petting session. Other neurochemicals connected to feelings of happiness and positivity also increased. While these findings were directly related to simple petting, massage is thought to obtain the same results.

A Day at the Spaw

You may be surprised at how easy it is to get your pup or kitty to warm up to daily massage therapy. “Massage is such a healthy, rejuvenating thing,” explains Jeanna Jurkowski, a certified Animal Massage and Care Provider and owner of Loving Touch Pet Massage and Care (www.lovingtouchpetmassage.com) in Las Vegas, one of many pet massage services available to local residents. In Jurkowski’s practice, ‘pet parents’ bring their animals to her for a relaxing dose of therapy. Using observational techniques, she strives to build trust with pets and introduce them to the wonderful world of massage. “Eventually,” she says, “the animals start to ask for it. They learn to understand and appreciate it.”

Jurkowski employs a method known as IPTouch, designed to improve both a pet’s body and spirit. With this method, initial techniques loosen the skin and help increase circulation. Once past this initial stage, she waits for cues from the animals to go deeper with the massage. If they pull away, she knows it’s not time yet. However, if they move closer, she understands that the pet is basically communicating they want more, and she’s quite willing to meet that request.

Of course, the pet’s parents are included in the process, as they are encouraged to stay with their pets during the massage. Jurkowski then assigns ‘homework’ for them, demonstrating different massage techniques designed to improve the pet’s blood flow and circulation. By continuing the process at home, parents help keep the process going, which ultimately yields greater benefits.

Try This At Home

If you’d rather explore pet massage on your own, Dr. Cheryl Schwartz, D.V.M. and author of Four Paws, Five Directions, offers helpful tips. For shoulder blades, over the rump area and down the midline of the chest to include between the front legs, she recommends a rubbing motion known as friction. Using the tips of your fingers, apply pressure in a forward and backward motion, beginning slowly, about one per second, and gradually increasing to two per second. Abdominal and larger muscle groups along the neck and back respond better to longer strokes using the flat of the hand and fingertips. Like Jurkowski, Dr. Schwartz watches for signals from the animal and adjusts pressure accordingly to ensure maximum canine or feline relief. Don’t forget to perform a bit of preventative health care along the way, searching for abnormalities that may include unusual swelling, lumps or heat. Any spot of concern should not be massaged and instead reported to your veterinarian.

Pet massage is more than just a passing fad. By making it a part of your furry companion’s daily routine, you just might find those relaxing sighs put you both in a better state of mind.

Trash vs. Treasure..Junking for the Perfect Storage Solution

Jul 3, 2012   //   by wagona   //   Pastimes  //  No Comments

By DeDee Birdsall

“To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.”

~Thomas Alva Edison

Move over Mike and Frank; just because you’re the stars of TV’s American Pickers doesn’t mean you’re the only treasure hunters in town. No matter what you call it – picking, junking or architectural salvage – it’s a far cry from traditional antiquing. When it comes to junking, you’re not seeking high end items but rather ordinary, discarded things or materials you can repurpose into upscale home décor. If you’re looking to reuse and refresh that dusty artifact or object hidden in the recesses of your grandma’s attic, then junking might just be the hobby for you.

Ready, Set, Go Junking

Whether for profit, pleasure or practical use, junking takes today’s disposable world to an all new level. Anybody with a keen eye and a bit of creativity can pick it up in no time. Some say junking is an intuitive experience that requires the ability to think or “junk” outside the box.    Considering how each item can be repurposed is half the fun, and it’s a cinch if you know how to be crafty. But before you run out to your nearest flea market, a little prep work is in order. When you think about storage projects, we’re not just talking Rubbermaid containers. With a quick attitude adjustment, unusual flea market finds can add a chic touch to any room of the house.

Creative storage solutions are something most of us could use, but a sudden trip to the flea market can sometimes leave us feeling lost. It’s easier and more fun to start your treasure hunt with a practical project in mind. Consider the areas in your home that need storage solutions. Do you have a spot in the entryway where the kids dump their bags, shoes and coats? Is there room at the foot of your bed where a little more storage could contain the clutter of books, CDs or extra linens? How about a place in the family room to store and conceal couch throws or other seasonal items? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, these projects will fit the bill.

Before you head out on your salvaging adventure, remember to do some research to gather more ideas, considering what you’d like to store and the room where you’ll use the project. Pick out local hotspots where you might find what you want, such as thrift stores, flea markets, antique stores and local auctions. If you consider yourself an expert haggler, remember to be respectful with your offers. Most vendors figure in a “haggle factor” and if you come across as interested and polite, you can likely negotiate the cost 20-25%. Anything above 25% can be considered offensive. With these thoughts in mind, you’re ready to go junking!

If you’re still trying to find something that fits your home and style, check out some of these quick and easy projects that you can make in a weekend without spending a fortune.

The Stow Away

Lidded baskets and trunks are ideal for storing blankets and throws, and this vintage pure cane sugar trunk is just the ticket. It’s a great conversation piece and oh so functional. Casters or legs can be added to the bottom to make it more portable, while adding glass to the top creates a side table and usable storage unit. Trunks are great finds and can be used to store a multitude of items, from duvets and pillows to sweaters and winter clothes, or even precious keepsakes such as photo albums. For more ideas on transforming vintage trunks, check out DIY project ideas at websites such as Better Homes & Gardens (www.bhg.com) or Pinterest (www.pinterest.com).

Original Cost:  $55.00

Total Investment:  $55.00

Sit a Spell – End of the Bed or Entry Bench and Storage

An outdated, seemingly useless school or shaker bench gets a much needed facelift and becomes an entryway or foot-of-the-bed bench and storage solution. The makeover here included custom upholstered cushions, paint, vintage locker baskets and a little TLC. Thanks to an attitude adjustment, this old shaker bench now serves two purposes, offering both a place to sit and added vintage locker baskets for handy dandy storage. Search the Internet and you’ll find creative solutions for repurposing outdated, unused coffee tables and a myriad of other ideas for turning old benches into surprising, functional and eye catching elements of your household décor.

Original Cost:  $65.00
Attitude Adjustment:  $165.00
Total Investment:  $230.00

Hold It Right There – Office Caddy

Nothing gets left out or lost in the shuffle with this vintage 7-Up carton turned desk organizer. A well-worn sense of charm gives it the appearance of old leather and it’s a great inexpensive tool to keep office necessities organized and within arm’s reach. In this photo, we used three organizers purchased from a local office supply store, but adding containers to separate your supplies is as easy as digging out the mason jars you’re storing in the pantry, and it helps keep your cost to a minimum as well. Not much work for a one-of-a-kind piece that truly highlights the idea of one man’s junk turned into another’s treasure. For similar ideas, visit Home Made Simple (www.homemadesimple.com) and search for “desk organizers” or check out this video at Better Homes & Gardens: www.bhg.com/videos/m/34254832/desk-and-craft-area.htm.

Junking Resources

If you’d like to get a better understanding of junking and find new ways to communicate with fellow junkers, obtain ideas and brag about your latest project, there are plenty of books and online resources available. One such website is JUNKMARKET Style (www.junkmarketstyle.com), created by Sue Whitney. The website also offers a subscription to its JunkMail e-letter, which will help keep you abreast of the hottest finds, projects, and tips. It’s a great way to get started in the world of junking and will help open your mind to the endless creative possibilities that await you. Other websites on junking worth checking out include:

Making A Difference

Henderson International School

For victims of domestic violence, finding help can sometimes be difficult. Since 1977, those who have suffered domestic abuse in Las Vegas have been able to turn to Safe Nest for support, shelter, advocacy and more. Thanks to a clothing drive held on April 10th by the Henderson International School, Safe Nest received some basic necessities to help those in their care.

The clothing drive, held by students and staff as part of the school’s “Kindness Week,” began with donors dropping off clothes at the school’s campus. Students then arranged the clothes on the football field to spell out the words “Be Kind” for all to see, a stunning visual representation of the power of generosity. In fact, so many clothes were collected during the drive that the words turned out larger than anyone thought they would! The initiative was inspired by the Josh Stevens Foundation, a local charity organization that inspires everyone to take time out to be kind to others.

While some of us may not give a second thought to things like the clothes in our closets, those seeking help from Safe Nest are sure to appreciate the compassion and dedication of the Henderson International School in ensuring that some of their basic needs are provided for.

For more information on how you can help Safe Nest, visit www.safenest.org.

TRONOX LLC

Mining has always been a large part of Nevada’s history, so it’s important for local youth to learn about its heritage as well as the hazards of abandoned mines. This past April, TRONOX LLC sponsored and participated in the McCaw School of Mines Golf Tournament and 15th Annual Dinner and Auction to help show their continued support for the school.

Since the inception of the McCaw School of Mines, which is built on the campus of the Gordon McCaw Elementary School in Henderson, TRONOX LLC has donated equipment to help construct the school’s mine exhibits. One such exhibit features a reproduction of an actual mine designed to educate students about mining and the dangers of abandoned mine entrances. “The McCaw School of Mines gives students an interactive experience to become familiar with Nevada’s mining history and safety initiatives,” says Rick Stater, Henderson Plant Manager for TRONOX LLC. “We look forward to expanding the program through our commitment in continued funding.”

Proceeds from the golf tournament, dinner and auction will go towards the upkeep, maintenance and expansion of the McCaw
School of Mines. Thanks in great part to the charitable contributions of TRONOX LLC, students from around the valley can participate in this hands-on experience and learn more about one of our state’s great legacies.

For more information on the McCaw School of Mines, visit www.mccawschoolofmines.org.

LinkedUp for Learning

One of the most important parts of the educational process is making sure students have the textbooks they need. With an impressive donation from LinkedUp for Learning, students throughout the valley received thousands upon thousands of textbooks this past April as part of an initiative to help improve our quality of education.

A mutual partnership between the Latin Chamber of Commerce, Another Joy Foundation, the Clark County School District and The Public Education Foundation, LinkedUp for Learning has donated generous amounts of textbooks to schools across Southern Nevada. R.O. Gibson Middle School received textbooks in both English and Spanish for use as supplemental teaching material in the school’s Dual Language Immersion Academy. Seven other CCSD schools received almost 25,000 Spanish language textbooks in various subjects for use in dual language programs, while sixteen Clark County schools were given nearly 10,000 English language textbooks covering everything from science to reading. More books will be distributed in the near future with material being specifically chosen to supplement the current curriculum.

“This is a powerful example of how public-private partnerships can impact public education,” said Judi Steele, president of The Public Education Foundation. “By linking our efforts together, we are leveraging all our resources to make a measurable and meaningful difference for all our children and our future.”

For more information about LinkedUp for Learning, visit www.thepef.org/programs_linkedup.html.

Couture for Causes

With such a high dropout rate in Southern Nevada, encouraging kids to stay in school is of particular importance to an organization such as Communities in Schools of Nevada. This past April, the 4th Annual Couture for Causes event brought together more than 400 fashionistas and their families for an afternoon shopping soiree to help support CISN’s mission to help local youth.

Event hosts Bree and Jason Goldwater transformed their ranch into an upscale flea market featuring a fashion tent filled with exquisite garments and accessories donated by local residents and boutique shops, the sale of which helped benefit CISN. The gathering also included a backyard cocktail reception area, a children’s activity corner and a phenomenal array of dining and libation offerings. Chefs from Wynn Las Vegas supplied miniature sliders, edamame, specialty tater tots and sushi, while mixologists from The Cosmopolitan manned a signature Bloody Mary Bar. Entertainment was provided by the talented performers of Wynn’s Le Rêve – The Dream, dancers from the Nevada Ballet Theatre and much more.

Summer Reading Recommendations

Jul 3, 2012   //   by wagona   //   In Review  //  No Comments

By Macy Walsh

The long, hot days of summer are here, and for those of you who insist on frying yourselves to that perfect shade of golden brown at the beach or by the pool, don’t forget to pack a good book or two in that beach bag. If you need help, here are some recommendations that I’ve enjoyed:

At the top of my list is a trilogy: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. The story takes place in Panem, a nation built on the ruins of North America, where the wealthy and cruel capital city keeps the 12 outlying districts in line by forcing them to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen believes that her fate is sealed when she’s forced to represent her own District 12 in the Games. But Katniss knows how to hunt and survive – and soon learns how to fight back against the tyrannical government.

In the ‘Believe It or Not’ category, we have the New York Times bestseller Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden, the shocking story of Shin Dong-hyuk, the only person born in a North Korean prison labor camp to have escaped and survived. Shin knew nothing of civilized existence; he viewed his mother as a competitor for food and witnessed the execution of his brother and sister when their escape plan was discovered. Don’t read this one if you have a weak stomach. Through the lens of Shin’s life, Harden unlocks the secrets of the world’s most repressive totalitarian state.

For those who prefer a more action packed read, check out The Command: Deep Inside the President’s Secret Army by Marc Ambinder & D.B. Grady. The U.S. Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) has proven to be the most lethal weapon in the President’s arsenal. Shrouded in secrecy, the Command has done more to fight the terrorist threat than any other single entity. Because of such high profile missions as Operation Neptune’s Spear, which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden, JSOC has attracted much attention, but most only know a fraction of the real story.

For the sports enthusiast, my top pick is The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods by Hank Haney. Hank’s tenure with the gifted golfer began in 2004, and this is a candid and surprisingly insightful account of a celebrated journey during which Tiger collected six major championships and rewrote golf history. Hank was one of the few people allowed behind the curtain, spending countless days with Tiger, often staying at his home and accompanying him at golf tournaments. The result is an intimate portrait of one of the sport’s enduring legends.

If you’re a political junkie like me, don’t miss The Presidents Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity by Nancy Gibs and Michael Duffy, a candid history of the private relationships, secret alliances and enduring rivalries of modern American presidents. Established by Harry Truman and Herbert Hoover at Dwight Eisenhower’s inauguration, the club is a complicated place where its members share the Oval Office experience but remain rivals for history’s favor. You’ll read about how JFK tried to blame Ike for the Bay of Pigs, how Eisenhower helped Reagan win his first race in 1966, the letter from Nixon that Bill Clinton rereads every year and the rivalry between Clinton and Obama. Fascinating stuff!

Whether your tastes run to fiction or non-fiction, history or sports or something in between, having your favorite book by your side helps provide a great escape from the sweltering heat. Pick one that suits your fancy and dive into a captivating story before you take a dive into the swimming pool this summer.

Comfort with a Twist…Republic Kitchen & Bar

We call it “comfort food” for a reason. One taste of mouth watering fried chicken or macaroni and cheese and we’re instantly transported back to those wonderful days when carbs didn’t matter and mom made the best meals in town. Republic Kitchen & Bar, located at 9470 S. Eastern Ave. in Henderson, has captured that old fashioned comfort food feel while giving a gourmet spin to those classic dishes you remember.

The modern atmosphere calls to mind a neighborhood pub retrofitted for the 21st century.  High ceilings tower above hardwood floors. A white brick accent wall dominates the bar area, adding an old fashioned feel to the contemporary trappings, while an intimate loft features plush couches and a wide selection of board games to enjoy. As you take your seat, peruse the cocktail menu for a broad range of tasty libations. The Rock Candy Lemonade ($9) was a tad too sweet for me but still enjoyable, blending Ketel One Citroen with lemon sour and rock candy syrup for a confectionary delight. The Republic Sangria ($7) also made a distinctive impression; smooth, chill and popping with berry flavors. Perfect for summer!

Upscale comfort food dominates the menu, all served up by an engaging and attentive staff. We started with the Tuna Nachos ($12.95), a twist on the traditional pub appie using seared ahi atop crispy wonton noodles for a tender yet crunchy texture, the ahi crust adding a nice kick of spice. Fried Chicken ($13.99) was a particular standout among the entrées, if a bit heavy on the stomach. Crispy and well seasoned, served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes with four buttermilk biscuits, it’s well worth the extra calories. Classic fare gets a new spin with the Republic TV Dinner, available with either turkey ($14.99) or meatloaf ($15.99). Each comes with veggies, mashed potatoes and cobbler. The turkey dinner includes stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce for a full Thanksgiving presentation, all plated on a fancy porcelain version of  a typical TV dinner tray. Smaller portions ensure you won’t feel overly stuffed, but don’t let the name fool you; the herby flavors of the juicy turkey and tasty trimmings create a variety of homespun tastes that you won’t find in the freezer section. Just like mom used to make, indeed. Remember to save room for desserts such as the sinfully good PB&J ($6), deep fried mini peanut butter sandwiches served with strawberry and chocolate dipping sauces. You may need two orders, because ours disappeared fast!

For a special treat, check out their all you can eat weekend brunch, accompanied by live jazz music on Sunday. You can choose from three tiers to fit any budget. Continental ($8.99) offers a variety of fruit, pastries and yogurt that includes sweet but somewhat flaky Mini Cinnamon Rolls. Continental and Hot Dishes ($13.99) form the second tier, adding favorites such as Cheese Blintzes and Belgian Waffles, along with fresh twists such as luscious Red Velvet Pancakes served with tangy vanilla agave syrup. Continental and Hot Dishes are joined by Specialties ($18.99) for the third tier, adding Eggs Benedict with plentiful Canadian bacon (available with lobster meat and filet for an extra fee), Chicken and Waffles and a delicious Pastrami Hash that adds a smoky, peppered flavor to a breakfast standby. Add all you can drink Mimosas ($15) or Bloody Marys ($12) and you’ve got the perfect lazy weekend meal.

Republic Kitchen & Bar takes comfort food to new levels, adding gourmet twists to old favorites for a fun and unique dining experience. Remember the good old days and discover something new to savor at the same time. For reservations or more info, call 463-3500 or visit www.republickitchenandbar.com.

Beyond the Sun Screen…

Jul 3, 2012   //   by wagona   //   Feeling Fit  //  No Comments

By Aly Wagonseller

Summer is certainly underway with family pool parties, visits to summer camp and theme parks and outdoor vacationing in full swing. Unfortunately, the consequences of all this fun in the sun can also be dangerous to your health. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 70,000 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in 2011, and the incidence is on the rise. A disease that doesn’t discriminate by age, melanoma is one of the most common cancers among young adults, and the chances of developing it only increase as we get older.

While most of us know that the continual slathering of a broad spectrum sun screen and protective clothing are a must for defending against dangerous UV rays, you may be surprised to learn that a change in your diet can also help reduce the risk of melanoma. Dr. Walter Quan, a melanoma specialist from the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, believes that by adding organic fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, seeds and legumes to your meals and switching to nonfat dairy and lean meats, you can reduce your risk of disease. He also names specific foods that aid in the production of healthy skin cells, thereby lessening the likelihood of a melanoma diagnosis.  Dr. Quan’s skin saving super foods include:

Citrus Fruits

With their high content of vitamin C, lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit contain antioxidants that protect cells from changes that lead to skin cancer. Lemonade never tasted so good!

Avocados

This amazing fruit contains glutathione, a compound that discourages the development of skin cancer. By adding three or four avocados per week to salads, sandwiches or egg white omelettes or by piling baked pita chips with a healthy helping of guacamole, you’ll reduce skin damage in a very flavorsome way.

Pumpkin Seeds

Vitamin E is essential for healthy skin and pumpkin seeds pack a big punch of this valuable nutrient. Toasted and thrown onto salads, they provide satisfying crunch while keeping cancer cells at bay.

Carrots, Sweet Potatoes and Cantaloupe

The color orange is the key to these beta-carotene rich foods that allow the body to produce vitamin A, a nutrient linked to reducing the risk of sunburn and skin cancer. Versatile and tasty, they’re great mashed, raw or made into fruit sorbet, the perfect addition to any summer al fresco meal.

Summer time is fun time, yet it’s important we pay attention to our long term health. By getting into the routine of using sun screen, covering up and adding delicious foods that promote healthy skin, you’ll be splashing about for seasons to come.
